Television is regarded as one of the most important means of communication and plays a crucial role in most people’s everyday life. Casual/informal conversations between colleagues in a workplace, also known as water cooler chat/conversation, often include discussing different TV programmes such as drama series, movies, news, documentaries and sports events. TV, particularly news, is closely related and therefore plays a major role in my daily life.

News can Initiate conversation between colleagues and friends. For me, a lot of conversations begin with “Did you watch the news last night?” or “Have you heard of the big news?” From then, the conversation leads to discussions of a wide range of other topics beyond the news itself, and occasionally create serious debates or controversies.
News has raised my social awareness, especially during COVID-19.
Everyone around me, including friends, family, and colleagues, pays close attention to the news to stay updated on the current situation of the pandemic and the government policies on quarantine and epidemic prevention measures. Therefore, news has become a common topic in water cooler conversations. To engage in conversations, it is important to keep up with the news
