Episodic Adult Memory and Aging
Often when memory loss is mentioned, the term is often associated with having a consistent correlation with aging; where one’s memory deteriorates as their age increases. In this study “Ecologically relevant episodic memory assessment indicates an attenuated age-related memory loss” there is a general focus on the use of Virtual Reality to test participants ability to retain and recount their memory. To find further data, a comparison between older and younger participants were made. In which, the methods of the study presented a VR scenario of a kitchen and participants were asked to do their best to remember the position of a total of 46 objects and were then asked to recall the objects that they remembered. This procedure was then done a total of 3 times to find if there may be a sequential pattern if there was an improvement in the number of items remembered. Results revealed that not only did age play a factor in memory but so did gender. Where young women had an exceptionally better ability to recall objects presented in the VR scenario; while the population of older men of healthy state were unable to recall as much tiems as young women participants. Their ability to better memorize was also a result of their form of examination when looking at the kitchen; in which they would mentally categorize the items presented (e.g., cooking utensils, metalware) and well-directed their attention to general background and context clues (cupboard, stove, sink, oven). From the study it has been found that one’s memory and cognitive abilities do not decline strongly as one’s age grows. But rather the use of visual cues and general techniques in memorization has been pointed out in a physical and interactive environment that it strongly helps to promote and stimulate one’s memory in retaining information.
