POLS 3323 International conflict.

You are required to write two 5-8 page papers (not counting title pages and bibliographies). The first will take on an article from the Betts book that we are not covering in class, reviewing it thoroughly, explaining its findings, and citing several sources (from our readings and those not included) that are relevant to the argument by the article (i.e. if you are covering Stanley Milgram’s “How good people do bad things” you will cover the other five articles on psychology and culture in the Betts book, as well as other material that is relevant from our class readings).
The second paper will involve you personally testing a hypothesis from the theoretical article covered, using the methods covered in the Monroe book. You will use quantitative methods, case studies, qualitative studies, and any other analysis to give it a fair test, where you don’t know the answer before you ask the question.

These papers are not intended to be book reports or conflict summaries. They are your opportunity to demonstrate to me your ability to apply conflict concepts and theories to cases not covered in class. Failure to relate class materials to the assigned topics in a systematic fashion will reduce your paper grade. Poor editing of the paper will also lower your paper grade, as will attempt to “stretch the length of the paper” by expanding margins on all sides beyond 1 inch, using a font larger than 12 pt., frequent “quadruple spacings,” etc.
Furthermore, I expect multiple citations from sources other than class readings (as well as cites from relevant class material). Papers that are NOT typed, double-spaced, stapled, and neat in the presentation will not be accepted.

Papers that receive A’s and B’s are those that find ways to incorporate class material and academic research sources into the paper. A’s and B’s will also have a “coherent” paper, linked by natural transitions between paragraphs, complete sentences, and plenty of cited material. These papers are turned in during class, and are neat, and presentable, including page numbers, a bibliography, and a separate title page (without a title on the second page). Think of what you would turn in at your first job; you’ve got to start somewhere preparing for the real world.
