Locke (and other liberals) posit that a focus on individual liberty and human equality can liberate mankind from the oppressive feudal regime. Critical readings argue instead that liberalism only liberates a subset of humans, and therefore betrays its original promise.
Which point of view has the better argument, and why? Make an argument either for or against the liberal position staked out by John Locke in Second Treatise Concerning Government, and addressing Carole Pateman’s criticisms and Locke’s involvement with the Fundamental Constitution of the Carolinas. This paper should go beyond simply presenting arguments, and should instead develop its own argument, articulating its own reasoning and evidence (this can and should be drawn from the readings, but read critically, with articulated reasons for accepting or rejecting claims from the texts).
