In the past week you read Federalist No. 51, “The Structure of Government Must Furnish the Proper Checks and Balances Between the Different Department,” written by James Madison. Madison argued that the checks and balances within the Constitution would keep any individual or branch of government from abusing power and that the internal structure of the government would be “a means of keeping each other in their proper places.”
Your assignment this week is to make a case for modifying the internal structure in some way—in either a small way or a large way. Clearly state why your proposed modification is desirable and how specifically it would lead to better government. If you could travel back to the Constitutional Convention, what would you change about the system of checks and balances that the Founders came up with?
