First, you need to create an effective title in your outline.
Second, you need to provide the references you will use in your essay in the Work Cited page.
Third, I suggest that you should define the terms “femininity” and “masculinity” and focus on discussing how femininity and masculinity influence the Italian people’s marriage and divorce by analyzing the film Divorce Italian Style and interpreting other theoretical viewpoints.

1. Since a paper requires a good topic the above suggestions are intended only to inspire the students; when a
student begins to write, s/he will want to focus the paper further on one specific topic.
2. Choose an effective title: it should predict the content and catch the reader interest.
Rules:
1. Paper 1 must be of 4 pages (1200 words) on one of the topics above. Papers should be 4 pages (1200 words) in
length excluding the Work Cited Page.
2. The paper must be typed, double-spaced (1 inch margins, 12-point type/normal-sized font). WORD FILE
PLEASE!!!
3. Please do not waste paper with a cover page. Simply start the paper with your name and last name (only) and
the title.
Use at least 2 primary references and 2 secondary references (Readings or other critical essays). Total 4
4. References must be cited: if you cite from The Leopard then please put page references in parentheses within
the text. Ex: Lampedusa describes the Prince “…” (135).
You must identify each quotation —be it an internet site,
an encyclopedia entry, a dictionary, a reference manual, etc.— within the text and by mentioning it in the Works
Cited at the end of the paper.
Ex: As Duggan mentions: “xxx” (134)

Papers will be graded according to the following rubric:
1. form: organization of thoughts, clarity of expression, spelling, grammar, punctuation, stylistics.
2. content: logic, clearly stated and developed thesis/position in the introductory lines of the essay, clear progression of thought/argument, persuasiveness of argument, originality of thought.
3. literary analysis: critical reading of textual examples (versus general “listing” of quotes), analytical insight, originality of reading.
4. conclusion (“the bigger picture”): in the final lines of your essay, clearly state how your thesis/position, supported by your textual examples, elucidates an aspect of Italian theatre culture (political, socio-historical, etc.).
