The essay assignment really functions as a culmination of a number of the activities and assignments that will be undertaken throughout the course.
As a first step at the beginning of the course, you will select a movie, play, concert, music video, public lecture or other kind of performance that you find interesting and that you can envision yourself wanting to tell others about. You are strongly encouraged to seek out a work that you have not already experienced before but that you make a point of experiencing specifically for this assignment. That way, the assignment has provoked you to seek out a new artistic experience, and your responses to that experience should be fresh and current. Just after you have experienced the work you have chosen to explore ask yourself such questions as the following: Did I enjoy this work? Was I moved and/or stimulated by it? Would I recommend it to others? Though this assignment will not be graded, you will be given feedback online (upon your submission to the Dropbox) and/or in the classroom.
