Thus, to end racism, we must change. And from that place, we must change the world around us. Rhonda Magee
Prompt 1:
In her book, Magee emphasizes that the work of racial justice begins with ourselves and the need to focus on the inward journey. Through a mindfulness-based awareness and compassion we can to awaken ourselves to the ways that race and racism have shaped our own brains and our ways of being in the world. Might there be a resistance to the idea of needing to work on the inner self rather than focusing outward on changing society? Why or why not?
Prompt 2:
One of the cornerstones of Magees approach to racial justice is what she calls ColorInsight. ColorInsight could be looked at as the opposite of color-blindness. It is an approach about being curious and deepening ones capacity to think, reflect and discuss how notions of race and racism might be showing up in our midst. What are your thoughts on ColorInsight and its ability to advance racial justice in a community college setting?
