Assignment Instructions:
Each student will select a recent (within the previous two-year period) major issue
In historically black colleges or universities in the athletic departments. (For instance, a student interested in event management might choose the controversy surrounding parking at the new Miami Marlins stadium; a student interested in public relations might choose the way Tiger Woods was re-introduced to the public post-scandal). The student will then research the issue, explaining how those in positions in leadership handled it, as well as how it was covered in the media. The assignment is a minimum of 1,000 words and a minimum of five (5) citations.
• Set the stage of the major issue or event, what is the issue (concern, problem,challenge, opportunity etc….)?
• Who is ultimate decision maker in the issue and what is their position/responsibilities?
• Why has the issue arisen and how is leadership or the ultimate decision maker involved?
• Whom does the issue affect?
• Establish a list of constraints that may be causing the issue
• What was the motive behind the issue if it was a similar situation to the Miami Marlins parking?
• Remember, you are examining cause and effect for the issue(s) identified in relation to sport.
Grading Criteria:
1. An introduction to and explanation of the sport related industry case. Information regarding student’s interest in choosing certain issue (why this particular issue is relevant to your career or what aspects you found interesting).

2. Research is relevant to the sporting industry, presented accurately and completely, relationship between real life practice and theory is clearly articulated. Student has provided sufficient analysis concerning why issue is a legitimate cause for concern in the sport industry. Opinions are backed up with strong arguments and evidence while still maintaining a critical evaluation of the issue. Integrating and synthesizing concepts in an original and innovative way. Important questions are fully examined such as the role of leadership during the issue/situation. Discussion on how the media handled the issue is explained along with suggestions for improvement or how student would have handled it.

3. Conclusion is clearly stated by tying together all relevant information listed above as well as other important information. Appropriate and insightful connections are made between the issue(s) and the strategic concepts found throughout the research.

4. Structure of the paper is coherent and easy to follow, no spelling errors, writing is clear and concise, fluency & appropriateness of terms, at least 5 citations, and proper format (APA, size 12 font, double spaced paragraphs, works cited/references).
