Continuous Professional Development for Health Care Professionals

Health care workers must periodically refresh their abilities, and continuing education, also known as ongoing professional development, allows for the renewal and upgrading of skills within the health care system. In many countries, continuous professional development for health care professionals is mandatory, particularly in some states in the USA, Australia, Spain, Belgium, and the UK. However, health care professionals in other countries undertake CPD on their own volition, particularly in Ireland, the Netherlands, and Sweden. According to Dr. Janina Beilner, a senior vice president of education services and workforce solutions, “With accelerating advances in health information and technology, physicians, nurses, and other health professionals must maintain and improve their knowledge and skills throughout their careers. That’s the only way to provide safe, effective, and high-quality healthcare for their patients.”

It is a process of ongoing education and development from initially qualifying education and has no specific period since it is a professional life. It aims at maintaining competence in practice and increasing professional proficiency and expertise (Fumić, Marinović, and Brajan, 2018). Health professionals acquire knowledge and skills and thus can help in competent practice and maintaining licensure. It follows that all licensed health care professionals should engage in continuing education to remain licensed hence a crucial requirement among professionals of all types. Nurses can take different modes of learning to acquire knowledge, including informal workplace learning, training, and workshops, literature appraising, constructive criticism and feedback, and self-reflection.

The approach can be considered re-skill and up-skill, particularly in the digital era for tools and methodologies. It is agreeable that practices, technologies, and knowledge are evolving, and circumstances that need interventions happen. In making upskilling efficient, the health care system can integrate comprehensive digital learning as a reference point for all professionals. There can also be online or certified courses, among other general courses for the population, to promote health literacy. Professionals can also use case studies and literature to upgrade their knowledge and learn about the challenges in their duties hence changing the situations or taking precautions. Medical professionals not involved in emergencies can be trained to operate in an emergency scenario (Nunnery, 2019). In planning, the professionals should budget or save to pay for their continuing education out-of-pocket and access some subsidized or free courses. It could also mean taking practical internships or nursing practice where the students or qualified practitioners meet other specialists like pedagogical lessons to learn and interact while sharing knowledge. The ideology helps leverage excellence in health care performance in responding to major health issues, and challenges patients face.
