Identify and describe an event of global significance that happened on the day your were born (I was born on May 12, 2000 so write about one event that is easiest for you, I provided screenshot on files) (literally the date, including the actual year). Ideally this event would be connected to one of the five regions of International Studies (Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East).
How does that event connect to themes we have been discussing thus far? These might include the biggest structural themes (the state system, the international economy, imperialism/decolonization), or it might focus on other issues such as identity, conflict, development, etc.). Are there particular readings or topics we have discussed that are relevant and, if so, how?
Have a conversation with your family about that event or other international events going on at that time? What were people thinking about the world into which you were arriving? Provide some sense of that conversation in your paper. Were they aware of the event you identified, what if anything did they think about it, how did it shape their sense of the broader world at that time, etc.? Also note that you might have at least part of this conversation prior to identifying an event as well–is there something that stuck out in their mind about that day beyond the arrival of you?
Offer your own independent assessment of the nature of the world at the end of the twentieth or beginning of the twenty-first century. This can take many different forms, but things you might consider include: how representative was the event you highlighted; what was the most prominent feature in your mind; what was the most critical issue to be resolved; were there emerging trends that would clearly shape the coming years, etc. There are many ways you could take this part, and those are only some possibilities.
Be sure to provide a conclusion that ties the pieces together.
