Overview:
Last week you were asked to think about someone you would like to help develop (see the attachment for last week’s assignment). Use this past assignment to help you with this one, remember that I am a math teacher helping a new teacher. With a specific person, this week please practice your listening, GAPS analysis, and creating SMART goals skills by helping someone else change, grow, and/or develop.
Talk with your chosen individual about their goals and share with that person that the purpose of your interaction is to help you, as a leadership student, learn how to encourage others in their development.

Compose a summary of your leader development interaction, recording highlights of the following:
1. A descriiption of the person (name, occupation, etc.)
2. In what way do you initially think (before interviewing the person) you can help this person?
3. Ask the person about his/her career to date, strengths and challenge areas, and goals. Keep this open-ended, and let the person do most of the talking. (You should be actively listening).
4. Note your initial responses. How are you initially listening? (Remember the listening exercise we completed). Is this type of listening helpful to your client? (Comment on verbal and non-verbal cues you are observing from the person you are trying to help. Adjust if necessary.)
5. Record the person’s personal and career goals. Short term (one year or less), Midterm (next 5 years), and Long-term (Let the person define this.)
6. Has your client made any progress on his/her goals to date? How so or why not? Is there any denial or resistance to change noted?
7. Mutually decide on one or two specific goals to work on. (Ideally professional, but personal will also be accepted if it is truly important to your client.)
8. YOU (not your client) should complete a GAPS chart for the person you are helping as you listen to him/her.
9. Create and record SMART goals for one mutually agreed upon goal. (These must be submitted here so that I can see how well you are doing with participatory goal-setting.
10. Agree on a time to follow up on the individual’s goal-attainment and providing feedback, and list that date/time/place here. I trust you to follow up.
