Brianna COLLAPSE

“ The 2017 workplace and Equal Opportunity Survey of Active Duty Members showed that 31.2% of Black/African American service members reported suffering racial discrimination, harassment, or both in the past 12 months, compared with 23.3% of Asian American troops and 21% of Hispanic troops”(Coughlin,2021). Racism and inequality can affect that person’s health, their well-being and can be the leading cause of depression. I chose the Hispanic ethnicity as my grandfather is full Hispanic and had served in the military. When he served, he would say that he was looked down upon and that he was treated the same way as African Americans. A yearbook he had shown me, had pictures blurred out when it involved an African American and also had pictures blurred out if that person was Hispanic. The yearbook showed which levels of ethnicity were superior during that time. Hispanic struggled to get promoted in the military. “But between 1995 and 2016, only one Latino had become a three-star general, even as the number of active-duty Latino officers more than doubled, from 6,117 to 15,033, during that period, according to a study by Casaba Group, a Latino veterans group, The Hill reports”( Sukumaran,2019).

Women are experiencing the same effects when serving in the military. Even as veterans, women struggle to be equal to men. “Some patients refused to call her by her proper rank or even acknowledge her. She was attacked with racial slurs. And during her residency, she was the sole Black resident in a program with no Black faculty, staff, or ancillary personnel”(Tafford, Laporta, Morrison, Wieffering,2021). Over the decades, female military personnel are slowly making progress and moved up in the military services. “Women are no longer excluded from any type of combat mission: They are pilots and vehicle drivers and mechanics and infantry officers. But while the U.S. military today has never had a higher fraction of women, they remain just 16 percent of the total force”(Robinson, O’Hanlon,2020). Military forces are working to increase the appeal of the military and broaden the pool of service men and women. They state that giving women more voices to women when it comes to the benefits of serving. There is a lot more that needs to be done for men and women who are discriminated against.
