Genocide persists as an international social problem. Since I began to teach this course, I have
seen several genocides begin and others persist. Selecting which genocides to study is a difficult
task as there is a trade-off between breadth and depth.
For this Module, you may select any genocide that you would like to investigate further. It may
be one we are studying or one outside of the course materials.
After briefly describing the genocide, please respond to the following questions regarding the
genocide you have selected:
• What factors led up to the genocide?
• What roles did the different groups take on during the genocide and upon termination of
the genocide (if it terminated)?
• What went wrong and what worked to bring the genocide to an end (if it ended)?
• If there were criminal trials, how did they proceed and what were the outcomes?
• What lessons can we learn from this case?
• Which theory do you believe explains this genocide and how would you apply it?
