42. Describe an original example of shaping. Remember: shaping is a procedure which gradually changes the initial behavior into the terminal behavior. It does not train a series of sequential behavior (i.e., chaining, which you will learn about in later chapters)
[Hint: think about teaching a kid to raise his hand: starts with moving hand, moving hand higher, raising hand to shoulder level, raising hand above head]
26.Original Example of Extinction One exceptional student example:
Reinforcement: No Thank you; Hold door for someone; Thank you
Extinction: No Thank you; Hold door for someone; No Thank you
After a while, you wont hold the door open for people if no one ever says thank you.
Please describe an original example of extinction. (1)
Original Example of Recovery
Its your turn to come up with an example of recovery from punishment or penalty. Please try to draw your examples from your own professional life or try to relate it to your life in some fashion. Student examples:
A child eats a piece of candy and starts to choke, so the behavior of eating candy gets punished. A few weeks later the child eats candy but does not choke. So, the behavior of eating candy no longer gets punished (recovery from punishment).
Whenever Toms friends are around he gets a lot of attention when he jumps off the tall dresser in his room. One day Tom jumps from the dresser and breaks his arm so he stops jumping from the dresser for a while. Tom eventually climbs back on top of the dresser and jumps but doesnt get hurt, so he starts to jump off the dresser more often.
42. Give an original example of recovery from punishment or penalty. The diagram in #43 includes the underlying reinforcement or escape contingency that maintains the punished response. Please describe your example here:
Differential Reinforcement or Punishment in Everyday Life
15. Whats your original example of differential reinforcement or punishment? (Real student examples: I have to push the door hard, to get it to
the right, the water turns off; if I talk on my cell phone outside I get good reception but if I talk inside, I dont; if I drink my shot slowly I dont gag, if I drink it quickly I gag.) (1)
