Reading & Answering (2 pages):
“Reading & Answering” is a reading summary but questions guided. It should summarize the
author’s main points they’ve been presented in the paper. You cannot write an accurate summary
unless you make careful choices about the essential or central text. You have to learn to filter out
not unnecessary material that doesn’t contribute to the author’s central argument. A summary is
not simply a compilation of random notes. Your task is to identify the author’s main points and
critical evidence.
Read this article and answers questions:
1，What is the subject of this paper? The structure and the author’s main points of the article
presented?
2，What is the author elaborates on the methodology in the essay and its main characteristics?
3，Do you think such a methodology can be used in social research? Can you give an example
of how to use this methodology in social research?
Bonus questions：
4，What kind of elaboration does the author’s methodology base? Do you agree or disagree with
such development? Why?
Grading criteria of the reading summary (total 10 points):
• 10 points: Reading & Answering shows that the reader has a clearer understanding of
the central points of the reading and can start thinking deeply;
• 8 points: Reading & Answering can summarize the main points of the reading;
• 6 points: Reading & Answering does not grasp the central argument of the reading but
pays attention to only partial reading.
• 4 points: Reading & Answering fails to reflect the reading correctly.
No less than 2 pages, in the standard font:
• One leading paragraph (introduce what you have read, and the author and the background
of the paper, etc),
• Answer questions listed in separate paragraphs (somethings you think are essential, or
central arguments of the author, etc)
• One ending paragraph (what you gain from the reading, what questions you may have,
the conclusion you can make, etc).
Save it in the WORD file and drop it as your submission.
Please Answer the following questions at the end of the paper after you summarize the first two pages-
1.) After you read the article what are three questions you can raise from the reading? Which indicates you are thinking something, whether they are essential. They are not necessary to be answered in the discussion or even without an answer.
2.) “The Thomas Theorem” (also indicated as “self-fulfilling prophecy”) says that “If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences.” Can you elaborate on this theorem from a sociological methodological perspective, mainly focusing on realism vs. relativism? Based on a relational perspective, can you draw inferences from one another and bring up one or two examples from your real-life experience?
3.) Based on the diagram of the hypothetical relational perspective of global connections and local transformation, answers questions:
1, what’s the relationship between Y1 and X?
2, what’s the relationship between Z and X?
3, Which one is the dependent variable, and which one is the independent variable? (There are several independent variables).
