Response Paper 1
Patriarchy
Patriarchy is the system whereby male dominance affects and oppresses women in various aspects of culture. Consider how certain religious beliefs, cultural traditions, or societal expectations may either exclude women from certain positions or preclude them from carrying out certain functions in societies across the globe. For this activity, use a sociological lens to examine the ways in which patriarchy affects the lives of people in two different societies. For example, think about the different ways laws, family behavior, romantic relationships, or even public safety are influenced by the value societies place on being male.
Present a cross cultural comparison of patriarchys influence in (#1) United States and in (#2) one another society and/or country.
Use a minimum of 2 major concepts and/or theories and appropriate terminology from the text to evaluate the expectations and practices in both cultures.
Explain each concept, theory, and term applied.
Explain how each concept and theory applies to the influence of patriarchy in different cultures.
Analyze the societal effects of this influence in the two cultures, such as its role in legislation and gender inequality.
