Please upload your typed answers to the questions below to the appropriate iLearn Dropbox. Where relevant, you can quote sparingly from your My Virtual Life program, and then explain further in your own words in order to support your answers to the questions. Do not simply cut and paste material from the program! Use your electronic textbook as a reference to help you explain your child’s development. You can also search the Internet for additional resources.
Please list references in APA format at the end of the assignment if you consult any sources other than the textbook or the My Virtual Life program. The references for our textbook and the program are included below.
Please submit your assignment as a PDF document. If it is in a format I am unable to open, I will be unable to assign you marks for it.
You must have your virtual child raised up to the end of 18 years, 1 month of age for this assignment to be marked.
1. At conception and birth/0 months:
a. Which circumstance of conception did you choose for your virtual baby, and why did you choose this option? (Remember, the conception choices were: adoption, conception with partner via sexual intercourse, sperm donor, surrogate mother, and in-vitro fertilization.)
b. What is the gender and name of your new virtual baby, and why did you choose that name? What is the meaning of your virtual baby’s name?
c. What were the circumstances of the birth / explain what information you have about the birth of your virtual baby (e.g.: baby’s health at birth and any other information).
2. At 8 months to 4-5 years of age:
As you raise your baby/child, read the summary reports from specialists near the end of each age range between 8 months and 4/5 years of age. What were strengths and weaknesses identified by each of the following specialist reports?
a. Pediatrician’s report based on the Bayley Scales of Infant Intelligence
b. Early childhood development specialist’s report
c. Kindergarten teacher’s report
3. At 3 years: (2 marks)
At the beginning of the 3-year-old age range, the My Virtual Life program discusses “overcontrolled”, “undercontrolled” and “resilient” personality types. Which personality type do you think your child has at this point? Name and define that personality type and explain your reasoning.
4. At 3 to 5 years:
a. What is the gender and name of your new second virtual baby, and why did you choose that name? What is the meaning of your second virtual baby’s name?
b. How is your first virtual child responding to the new virtual baby? (Hint: Look within both the 3-year age range and also in the 4 to 5-year age range for your first virtual child’s various reactions regarding having a new virtual sibling.)
5. For the 6 years of age range:
a. What are you planning to do for your future real-life career? Name and define which of the eight categories in Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences you think will be the most important one to take into account in your future career. Explain why, using a specific career example.
b. In the 6-year age range, what did you decide to teach your virtual child about gender roles, and why did you choose this approach?
6. For the 8 to 10 years of age range:
a. Read the psychologist’s report about your first-born virtual child; what does this report mention about your virtual parenting style?
b. Choose one of the following issues to discuss: one health challenge or school challenge or sibling challenge or social challenge your virtual child is dealing with in the 8- to 10-year age range. Or, if you prefer, instead discuss one of the challenges listed above as it pertains to your younger virtual child. How are you, as a virtual parent, helping your virtual child with this challenge?
7. For the 10 to 11 years, 11 months age range:
Read your first-born child’s 5th grade report card near the end of the 10 year 11 months old section. Explain one strength area your virtual child has, according to this report. Then, explain whether you think this virtual child strength area is mainly due to “nature” (genetics/inheritance) or mainly due to “nurture” (environment/upbringing). (Hint: You can read about nature versus nurture in your textbook.) Don’t choose both nature and nurture; choose only one or the other, even if you think there’s only a slight difference for your virtual child. State specifically whether you are selecting nature or nurture, define the term you choose, and use a specific example from your virtual child’s life to clearly explain your answer. (2 marks)
8. At 12 years of age:
a. How do your older and younger virtual children interact when your older virtual child is in the 12-year age range? How do they get along/what is happening to their relationship? Give an example.
b. How is your younger virtual child doing in school at this point? Explain.
9. At 12 years, 11 months of age, read your virtual child’s 7th grade report card.
a. What is one relatively stronger area for your virtual child, and what is one relatively weaker area for your virtual child, according to this report card?
b. What comments did the teacher(s) make at the bottom section of the report card? (You can summarize and/or quote directly here). Do you, as a virtual parent, agree or disagree with what the teacher(s) said? Explain. (If your virtual child did not receive a comment, then explain something else in the report that you, as a virtual parent, agree or disagree with).
10. At 14 years of age:
Read over your virtual life answers in the 14-year age range, and explain one example involving a moral issue that you and your virtual adolescent interacted about. Then, read about Kohlberg’s moral theory. State the number(s) and name(s) of both the level(s) and stage(s) of Kohlberg’s theory that you think your virtual child/adolescent is in for this age range of around 14 years, and explain why, using your example from above. (Hint: you can look up Kohlberg’s moral theory quickly via the search bar in your e-book.).
11. At 15 years of age: (1 mark)
In this age range, find and read your older virtual child’s 9th grade report card. What is one strength your virtual adolescent has, according to this report card?
12. At 16 years of age:
a. At this age, discuss one of the following issues that is relevant for your virtual adolescent, and explain the specific example/what happened: risk-taking, drugs, alcohol, sexual interests/dating, driving/car use, employment, tattoos, bullying/cyberbullying, friendships, or emotions. Then, explain how you, as a virtual parent, interacted with your virtual adolescent about this particular issue.
b. How is your younger virtual child, who is around 13 years of age now, doing in school in the 8th grade? (Discuss one school related issue.)
13.At 17 to 18 years, and 1 month of age:
What are the final plans and happenings for your older and younger virtual children as this portion of the MyVirtualLife program ends?
14. Apply to Your Future Career: 16-18 years of age:
Choose one theory from Chapter 2, Theories of Development, in your e-textbook. State which theory you chose, and then explain one specific named and defined term from that theory and how you would apply that to specifically working with adolescents in your future real-life career (or, if you cannot think of an adolescent example for your real future career, you can choose an alternate hypothetical career).
