Every time you directly quote or paraphrase someone, you need to give them credit. This course and the DHA program use APA style to introduce the contributions of others and their published works. There are two types of in-text citations — parenthetical citations and narrative citations. These citation options will appear in the text of any scholarly writing, including your essays.
Each citation should be supported by one complete reference in the reference list at the end of the paper. References provide the information necessary for readers to identify and retrieve each work cited in the text. In your submissions, accurately prepared references must be carefully checked against the original publication and formatted in APA style.
While you need to understand the relationship between citations and references, following are three examples of parenthetical citations. As indicated below, citations include the last name of the author and the year of publication.
