Learned the value of independence from an early age
– Immigrated to US from Korea with my mother at 9 years old; grew up in a single-parent household in a new country where we did not know anyone else.
– Initially lived in community housing in the Bronx because we did not have enough money for an apartment rental.
– During this transitional period, I was also unable to attend school for nearly a year. Despite these barriers to education, I was determined to take control of my future.
– While my mother worked most days of the week to make ends meet, I spent countless hours at the library learning English using childrens books and audio tapes. Less than 2 years after starting school in the US, I began to outperform most of my peers on English exams.
