This paper allows students to identify an issue or topic of interest to them. The issue or topic selected is known to affect academic performance and/or student well-being and is commonly found in school settings and discussed in the syllabus. Through this assignment, students also identify a specific program or programs, services, or strategies from evidence-based literature to address the issue, including the success of these interventions with diverse populations, schools, or communities. Students then outline a design for the intervention. The design includes proposed activities, other school personnel or individuals to include in the design, and an evaluation plan for monitoring progress.
The paper should be a minimum of four pages. Describe the topic using scholarly literature. Next, identify and select programs, services, or strategies from evidence-based literature (at the local school, community, state, and/or federal level) that have been documented as successful in addressing the issue or topic. Lastly, identify the proposed activities to be undertaken by the social worker and/or additional personnel.
For example, say you select students with diabetes. You would research and find 4 sources that tell about students with diabetes and programs, services, or strategies for students with diabetes. Your first section is the topic. You would describe the topic (students with diabetes). The second section is three programs, services, or strategies for students with diabetes. It is preferable that you choose one local program, one state program, and one federal law or program. This may be a program by the American Diabetic Association or the Center for Disease Control. Again, these need to be supported by sources and articles that you cite in APA format. The last section is specific activities you would perform for students with diabetes. You would select from your sources three specific activities for students with diabetes. Your three strategies might be to receive more training on diabetes, educate the faculty and staff on students with diabetes, and collaborate with the nurse to develop safety plans for students with diabetes. You cite sources that provide evidence as to the effectiveness of these three activities.
