Create an essay to introduce the design strategies and use of materials of Thorn crown
Chapel or any building of your choice.
Each team can have a maximum of three students. Each team must complete and submit an essay
to elaborate their findings related to the following four topics:
1. Selection and use of building materials (what, why, and how).
2. Summarize the design challenge, construction challenge, and related solutions with a
focus on construction techniques.
3. Illustrate/explain the design strategies of light-weight wood construction.
4. What have you learned about the wood from this case study?
Please include photos, sketches, or other visuals if needed. Include citations for sources
(hyperlinks are fine).
Format of essay:
1. Each team shall submit one single pdf file.
2. Includes a title and names of team members.
3. 1” margin on all four sides of the paper.
4. Use letter size page setting. Portrait layout.
5. Minimum 3 pages. Maximum 10 pages.
This assignment will cover 10% of the total semester grade. Extra credit (1% of the total grade)
will be granted to any team that submits a PowerPoint and prepares to present to the class.
