Read chapter 1 in your textbook called the mission & the method A summary of the discussion assignments (see syllabus under discussion section for a more comprehensive explanation). I also posted a modeled example below so that students can see what I am referring to with regard to topic summary and application. Notice the format includes labeling the topic and application, and done in separate paragraphs. You should model this too. Obviously, do not write on correlation since I provide a modeled example for this topic. To start a discussion post, create a new thread. You won’t be able to read other student’s posts until you post your own discussion comment by creating a new thread. 1a) Choose any topic discussed in the assigned chapter and state the exact topic (see syllabus for example under discussions section) b) Begin with a short description summary of the topic prior to applying the info. Make sure you read the textbook info on the topic so that it will be clear to me that you understood and digested the information (do not use other sources on the topic). This should be approximately 3-4 sentences. c) Provide your own examples of application of the topic. Note that the application needs to be different from the textbook. I want to see your ability to apply the info. (#1b and 1c together need to be at least 200 words or more). Most of your discussion post should be on your application of the material and not the topic section. 2) This part here in which you need to reply to another student’s discussion post can be done when students’ posts become available this week OR you can wait until next week (week 3) to go back to this week (week 2). Respectfully comment on another student’s post by providing additional your own application examples (different from the textbook and not summarizing the topic) by clicking on a student’s comment and then pressing reply to that student’s post. (#2 needs to be at least 150 words or more) Students will not be able to see other students’ posts until they post. I don’t want it that students see other students’ posts which then gives them the same idea what to write. So, be careful NOT to submit your post until it is completely ready to be posted. Week 2 will be somewhat of a training period. In other words, if students make a serious effort (especially with regard to minimum word count in your post) in doing the discussion comments, they will receive full credit even though I will be making comments that might indicate some needed changes for future posts to get full credit. I will be monitoring and sending feedback to individual students throughout the semester. The following are rubrics to help illustrate the expectations for the 2 parts of the discussion comments: Grade Criteria for summary of application or response to another student’s post 0 Stated topic or description of it unclear, student did not comprehend the topic based on the reading in the textbook, did not apply content from textbook; poor clarity of writing; copied or same examples as textbook; very poor spelling and/or grammar; word count is inadequate 1 Stated topic and brief description of topic for application not completely clear, student did not completely grasp the reading content on topic, applied content but too brief; some inaccurate information; too many spelling and/or grammar errors; writing is somewhat unclear; word count is not adequate 2 Stated topic to apply info clearly, applied original content well, accurate information with good spelling and grammar; clarity in writing; at least 200 words or more of application for original discussion post/150 words or more of application on another student’s post Modeled example for your discussion comment. Discussion comment example for students on the reading for chapter 1. Notice that the topic and application are labeled and separated by paragraphs. Notice that everything is in my own words and not copied from the textbook or another source. I begin with a short description of the topic (3-4 sentences) prior to applying the info in a separate paragraph labeled application. Note that the application needs to be different from the textbook because I want to see your ability to apply the info. Altogether the discussion post needs to be at least 200 words with most consisting of application. Don’t forget to click post after writing your discussion. Always check that it posted correctly. It is your responsibility to make sure it was posted. Students should NOT pick correlation as a topic since I am providing an example here. Topic: Correlation Correlation has to do with relationships between variables. Just because two or more variables are correlated it does not mean that one causes the other. Correlational research consists of looking at the strength of the relationship (0 to 1.0) and the direction of the relationship (positive and negative). Application: An example of a positive correlation is height and weight. Generally speaking, as people’s height increases their weight also increases which depicts a positive relationship because they are going in the same direction. An example of a negative relationship is absences in a class or on-line course is negatively correlated with the grades of the student, which means as more absences take place, the grades tend to go lower, which are opposite directions. Regarding the strength of the relationship, height and weight in some studies of groups of individuals have shown to be about +.80 correlation, which is considered a strong relationship based on the number being close to 1.0. Absences and grades are negatively correlated which might end up being at around -.50 which makes it a moderate negative correlation. Of course, there are other factors that influence grades and absences is only one of them. How much familiarity a person has with the material, natural intelligence, amount of time studying for the exam, etc. are not considered when one looks only at absences and grades on an exam or the course. It is important to remember that just because two variables are correlated it does not mean that one causes the other because there even could be a third variable causing both of them. For example, violent video games are positively correlated with violent acts of aggression. In a correlation study, we could not say that one causes the other. We would have to conduct an experiment to determine causes and effect. It may be that people with a biological predisposition for aggression like to play violent video games and also act out violent acts or it could be that violent acts cause people to play violent video games. The point is this question of cause and effect cannot be answered in a correlation research design but only in an experimental design. Don’t forget to click the “post” button when you are done composing the discussion comment. If you wish, you can post an application comment (adding additional application examples – NOT whether you agree or disagree with the content) on another student’s post for this week when they become available that should also be close to 150 words or more. Next week, students will also have the ability to go back to this week to leave an application comment on another student’s post but if you wish to get it out of the way it is perfectly fine to post now. You do not need to post on another student’s introduction to the course from week 1. You must start a thread before you can read and reply to other threads
