The above video is from 1963 when President Kennedy sent the National Guard to enforce the court ordered integration of the University of Alabama. Governor George Wallace attempted to invoke the constitutionality of state rights vs. an overreaching federal government. In light of that video, pick one of the other four issues we studied or looked at this week (medical marijuana, natural disasters like Katrina, drinking age debate, Federalism and Covid-19) to discuss the following question:
In what instances should the Federal government weigh in on issues that affect the citizens of a particular state? In the struggle of shared powers, what constitutional safeguards do either state governments or federal jurisdiction have? Be sure to formulate your own opinion and use as much constitutional terminology as possible (supremacy clause, necessary and proper clause, 10th amendment, dual/cooperative federalism, etc).
