Assignment 1: Number and Operations Instructions and Submission For each of the following problems, write two different explanations of how to solve the problem for students who haven’t seen that type of arithmetic problem before. Incorporate the exact language that you would use with the students in your explanations and include appropriate diagrams and applications. You can use software to create the diagrams; for example, if you’re using Microsoft Word, select Insert > Shapes. Include APA style references to any methods from the course or the textbook that you use. The goal for this assignment is to come up with two distinct methods or explanations for solving each problem, with the idea that while one student may understand one method, another student may respond better to an alternative explanation. As a rough guide, use one page for both explanations of each problem, including diagrams (assuming single-space formatting). There are 8 problems, so your entire document should be approximately 8 pages. An example solution for the problem “−3+2 = ?” is provided at the end of these instructions. The problems to be explained are: • 5 − (−3) = ? • 6 ÷ 2 = ? • 1/3 + 2/5 = ? • ¼ × 2/5 = ? • 9/10 ÷ 1/5 = ? • −0.3 − 0.03 = ? • 0.04 × (−2.5) = ? • −0.8 ÷ 0.04 = ? Grading Criteria • 5 marks for each explanation (i.e., 10 marks for each problem, 80 marks total): 1. Solution steps are mathematically accurate and contain no arithmetic mistakes. 2. Description is clear and concise and uses appropriate mathematical terminology. 3. Use of the chosen strategy is outlined, and explanations are given for calculations, expressions, and equations that are used. 4. Diagrams are used appropriately and are explained.
