An expert audience is one that has specialized knowledge of a document’s subject-matter. This kind of audience often has advanced degrees in fields related to the document’s material. A non-specialist audience does not have advanced knowledge of the document’s subject-matter. Instead, this audience likely wants to learn enough about the subject in order to use that knowledge for an immediate, practical purpose. An audience’s background, needs, interests, culture, and values can all determine how that audience understands or responds to a document – and therefore authors should take these things into account when creating documents for specific audiences. In this assignment, you will analyze the audiences of two documents and compare the differences between the two documents in regard to their intended audiences. Catherine Boeckman’s “The Three Sisters” targets a non-specialist audience while Tania Ngapo’s “Historical Indigenous Food Preparation” targets an expert audience. Create a short report that examines the rhetorical decisions made by these authors as they design documents targeting these two very different audiences. Follow these guidelines as you create your report: Use block formatting (single spaced, 12 pt., standard font; no first-line paragraph indentation; include 1 line of space between paragraphs) Your report should be between 400 and 600 words long (approximately 1 page) Use bold-formatted primary and secondary section headings to help your audience navigate your report. Address the following categories for each article, and explain how the authors use these features to target their primary audiences: Document design Style and tone Source usage Remember: Focus on analysis rather than summary. Use specific examples to explain how the authors create each document for a specific audience. Click here Download Click hereto view a model for this assignment.
