Can people who live in cities solve their collective problems together? If so, how? If not, why not?
For your final paper assignment, choose a particular urban problem, and write a paper of no more than 5 double-spaced pages comparing two theorists we have read with respect to their answers to the questions of whether and how that problem can be solved. For the purposes of this assignment, you may choose any two theorists from our syllabus. You will need to explain enough about their theories in order to demonstrate how those theories lead to particular answers to these questions about urban self-government. Your paper may, if you wish, focus primarily on one theorist, and discuss the other more briefly for comparison or contrast.
You are expected to comply with the UCSD policy on academic integrity. This includes citing your sources appropriately. You are not expected to draw on any sources other than the required readings for this course, but you may do so if you wish. Here is an overview of the citation practices appropriate for this paper.
If you quote a passage from a text, you must include the quoted passage in quotation marks. If you quote or paraphrase a passage, you must cite the source with as much precision as the text will permit, either in parentheses or in a footnote. If it is a paginated text, such as a printed book or a pdf file with page numbers, then a citation by page number is appropriate. For example:
McKenzie defined human ecology as “a study of the spatial and temporal relations of human beings as affected by the selective, distributive, and accommodative forces of the environment” (p. 288).
If you paraphrase a specific passage, even if you do not quote it verbatim, you should also cite the source as specifically as possible, and by page number if possible, or by chapter and paragraph number if no page number is available. If there is any ambiguity about which text you mean, the citation should indicate the author (and the date, if we read more than one text by the same author):
These theorists defined human ecology as the study of how the environment affects spatial relationships between people (McKenzie, p. 288).
Pattillo might agree with W. E. B. Du Bois that “every group has its upper class (Du Bois, 1899, p. 7).
When in doubt, err on the side of caution. Your citations should be sufficient to identify the source unambiguously. For the purposes of this course, it is usually not necessary to list complete bibliographic information about sources that are listed on the syllabus, because there is no ambiguity about which text by DuBois (for example) you mean. If you cite sources that are not on the syllabus, then you should include complete bibliographic information in any standard citation format, either in a footnote or in a references cited section. But there is no need to cite any sources other than the required course readings for this assignment.
So you will be doing the final paper with is: “Can people who live in cities solve their collective problems together? If so, how? If not, why not?” To answer this prompt I have provided a thesis in which you will answer: Can people come together to solve the issue of ghettos together via self-governance, or is this an issue of government out of control of the people?”. To answer this and back up any claims I have also provided two theorist and their publications in which you will use. you would have to go through their publications to understand and write a solid paper. These publications are not a lot of reading, so think this can be manageable for you. Is there a way that we can stay connected within the next 24 hours so if you have any questions for me and updates on the paper?
