*Leading change QI project topic: Surgical teams to do a fire-risk assessment as part of the time-out at the start of surgery.
*State why this is an important QI topic: I am an operating room nurse and our patients trust us with their well being. Integration of fire risk assessments and preventative actions in surgical safety checklists can mitigate a catastrophic and preventable event.
It is important for the OR team to consider what they can do to reduce the risk of a fire, especially in high-risk situations such as surgery above the xiphoid or when using an open oxygen source such as a mask or nasal cannula. This Fire risk assessment during the surgical time-out make sure that anesthesia, the nurses, the techs and the surgeon are all on the same page and likely takes the risk off an OR fire to near zero. Integration of fire risk assessments and preventative actions in surgical safety checklists can mitigate a catastrophic and preventable event.
