For your first Formal Essay, choose one of the following and compose an essay of approximately 750-1000 words. You must include at least one quote from a fellow student’s Response Paper and one quote from any other source (including my lectures) in the week’s Module. Your essay must be submitted via Canvas Assignments, and it must be MLA-formatted (a link to MLA formatting appears in Modules, Resources for Writing). You will notice that the essay questions mirror the Response Paper topics; feel free to use that material (albeit with sufficient editing, etc.) in your Formal Essay #1.
1. Choose two of the Cinderella tales we read for Week 1 and discuss how those represent expectations of girls–how are the two Cinderella tales similar or different in these expectations? Remember to be clear and specific about what those expectations are, and don’t generalize to the world at large–stick to the texts.
2. Compare the significance (symbolism) of eating in Alice–make sure that you are discussing eating’s symbolic value (not literal value–don’t write, for example, “the characters eat to live”).
