2. A company’s handling of their CEO’s health and disclosure of it is a controversial subject. How should the board of directors weigh their obligations to the organization and its stakeholders against the protection of the CEO’s personal privacy?
If the board of directors does disclose the CEO’s health status, how detailed/extensive should the disclosure be? Basically, does a CEO have any privacy when their health is concerned?
3. If a CEO’s health can be considered a public matter, is it appropriate for companies to disclose a CEO’s behavior and other personal matters that can potentially impact their ability to lead the organization? Examples of such behavior and personal matters can include the following:
An extramarital affair,
He/She is going through a very contentious divorce and/or custody battle, or
He/She participates in sky diving, flying a private plane, race car driving, etc.
Do stakeholders have the right to know this information? Do stakeholders even need this information?
4. Final thoughts and closing remarks: At the end of the day, did Apple handle the disclosures of Steve Jobs’ illnesses appropriately and demonstrate social responsibility to their stakeholders?
