Chase and the idea of the Slave Power, and Lincoln’s “House Divided” speech in 1858, explain why the Republican Party emerged as the dominant northern political party in the 1850’s? What were its central ideas? Was it an anti-slavery party? If so, in what sense? What was the appeal of the Republican Party to white northern voters? And why did it cause such fear among voters in the South?
