Question
“Between 1750 and 1950 how was family life in England affected by the growth of employment outside the home?”
Guidance notes:
There was an overall shift in working practices over the course of the period 1750–1950, which saw most paid work come to take place outside of the home. This question asks you to consider the various ways in which this shift in working practices impacted family life in any one of the four nations. To fully answer this question, you need to consider change and continuities over time, but you may focus on a shorter time frame (40–50 years) than the question suggests, or look across the whole period. In your response, it is important that you engage with historiographical debates about the notion of the ‘separate spheres’ of work and home. You will find the readings for Block 5 useful as a starting point in this regard, particularly the chapters by Davidoff et al., ‘The family and the historian’ and ‘Conceptualizing the family’. Although your first port of call for secondary readings should be Block 5, you will be expected to range outside of the module material in your answer. Likewise, there is plenty of scope here to use (online and/or archival) primary sources in your essay. Although you should address the national picture and broader debates in your response, you should also maintain a focus on the local by drawing on relevant evidence to support your argument. It would be entirely legitimate to examine one locality by means of a case study.
