One of the major criticisms of utilitarianism is that it fails to preserve human rights. Is this true? Why or why not? To test this proposition, apply the criteria originally outlined in Chapter 1 of your text (attached as PDF) that state the purpose of ethics: (1) the promotion of eudaimonia (human flourishing); (2) to reduce human suffering; & (3) to resolve conflicts of interest in a just manner. In your opinion, does utilitarianism fulfill any of these ends? If so, state which ones and explain how they are fulfilled? If not, state which ones it fails to achieve and why.
