As social workers, examining issues of diversity requires that we also think critically about issues of oppression, marginalization, and social justice. This assignment is an opportunity to explore a current social justice issue that affects the communities in which you will work as a social worker, and to explore ways that you can contribute to advocacy efforts as a social worker.
Students can listen to a podcast, watch a documentary, Ted Talk etc. to spark an interest. Then research the topic of interest and engage in reflection about the topic. The written assignment, which is 4-5 pages in length, will contain the following:
a. Discuss and summary the podcast, documentary, Ted Talk, etc. that is most interesting to you, can be LGBT COMMUNITY, IMMIGRANTS, OR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY .
b. Research the history of the issue, including the following information about the identified group:
History of treatment of identified group as it relates to health, legal system, politics, economics, education, and oppression.
Commonly held beliefs and stereotypes about the identified group.
c. Research and discuss current social action campaigns and/or groups advocating on behalf of the identified group, and how they developed (at least one aside from the professional and/or group);
d. Discuss the role that social workers play/can play in advocating on behalf of the identified group;
e. Reflect on how the knowledge you acquired throughout the process will impact your social work practice
