How is occupational therapy positioned to in this area?

Occupational Therapist are positioned to impact driver safety in elders due to the growing need for assessment and training in this demographic. According to the AOTA (2022) automobile deaths in elders after the age of 60 are growing at a staggering rate, coupled with that fact that our population is aging at a rate expected to reach 70 million people (about twice the population of California) over the age of 65 by 2030. Older drivers are more likely to suffer severe injury during a crash, and more likely to cause injury to others (AOTA, 2022). There are many factors that impact unsafe driving during the aging process, “vision impairment, cognitive limitations, side effects of medications, slower reaction times, muscular difficulties, and limited range of motion” (AOTA, 2022). These factors are all issues that an OT (Occupational Therapy) practitioner is trained in addressing as they fall within the OT scope of practice. As OT practitioners we are commissioned to assist individuals with attaining the best quality of life possible, maintaining the ability to drive can be an important occupation that is essential to an individual. Maintaining the ability to drive can not only allow independence in IADL’s like shopping and hospital appointments it also allows for social participation and interactions with family and friends.

What skills/attributes does an occupational therapy practitioner need to work in this emerging area?

For an OT practitioner to work in this emerging field there is additional training that is required. There are two options that an OT can explore; Certified driver rehabilitation specialist and Driver rehabilitation specialist. To become a Certified driver rehabilitation specialist an OT practitioner would have to meet the additional education and experience requirements provided by the Association of Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (ADED). To become a Driver rehabilitation specialist the AOTA, offers over 10 different CEU classes that you can take to equip an OT practitioner for Driver rehabilitation training.

What are some obstacles or barriers in this area?

Some obstacles in this area include financial aspect, increased training, having multiple vehicles with multiple different adaptations, not having enough community support, and limited community wide transportation.

How could you as an occupational therapist utilize an occupational therapy assistant in this area?

Occupational therapy can assist with training and assessment of driving skills by providing the opportunity to continue to promote the health and wellbeing of the client. Driving allows the client to continue to participate in daily life activities such as leisure activities, social participation, grocery shopping. As a therapist assessing their driving abilities or assisting with adapting the vehicle through a driver training and assessment program if the client is not able to safely drive assist with assessing other transportation services which all can help promote those skills in relation to the overall health and wellbeing.
