Schools are the number one employer of occupational therapists in the US. Therefore it is important to be familiar with school based practice and how students qualify for it. Each state varies some in their qualification process and how services may be provided. Explore your state department of education webpage ( Illinois is state to search) to find the forms your state uses and the rules they use for qualification. You can also search for blogs or other websites that may explain this info. Be sure to site your sources this week. For your discussion post you need to answer the following questions:
1. Share a copy of the forms that your state uses for the evaluation and the plan (in Ohio the ETR and IEP). For this include a link if possible and screen shot the pages OT would need to write on.
2. Explain what makes a child eligible for services (all services but OT specifically) in your state. Go beyond saying it is a team decsion and find out what parameters are there. Are there qualifying categories, scores, or both??? Is it different for prechool versus school aged children?
3. Find the timeline for how fast these forms must be completed once the process is initiated.
4. Can OT stand alone as a service in your state or is it considered an additional service (meaning you have to have something else on the plan to get OT)?
5. See if you can find out how many minutes are common to give to most kids on OT in your state. (This is merely for interest and discussion. Those in schools should be able to share a lot here. And, yes, it should be individualized but in most places a lot of children get about the same.)
6. Do you have to note least restrictive environment in your state? What does that refer to and why is it important?
**Please note that in some states when you are looking to find this information they may refer to OT, PT and SLP as related services.
Finally, list three interesting facts that you learned when reviewing child development for months 6 and 7 and note how you would look for these items if you were doing a non-standardized assessment
