For this summative, you will investigate a meaningful problem that is significant to you, personally. This problem should have an abundance of useful statistical data and reputable data sources to use in your study. You will be using methods of statistical analysis and choose statistical diagrams to help review and prove your point regarding the topic of interest.
In completing this project, you will do the following:
• Choose a topic that interests you, where there has been significant reputable research done from which you can draw on for inspiration.
• Thoroughly research the topic of study, including studies done by others, in order to develop a clear topic and set of 3-6 research questions. Be sure to come up with questions that will require you to use multiple techniques in the analysis (such as measures of central tendency and spread, histograms, z-scores, box plots, scatter plots, etc.).
➢ You must include one scatter plot that has two variables, neither of which is time.
You should not have all your graphs as something vs. time: population over time, or carbon emissions over time, etc. For example, you could have breast cancer rates vs. carbon emissions.
• Design a survey that will allow you to explore myths that exist regarding your topic. ➢ Describe what type of sampling you would use to distribute your survey, and
explore the possible biases. Try to eliminate as much bias as possible. ➢ You may give out the survey if you choose.
• Use reputable sources (E-Stat, Gapminder, UN-Stat) to gather and analyze data concerning your research questions. You must create your own graphs using Excel or open office, you may not just copy the graphs from Gapminder or from another website.
• Examine and account for a number of possible extraneous/hidden variables (e.g. inflation, population growth, etc) that may weaken your results.
• Come to a conclusion regarding the outcomes of your investigation, accurately summarizing the results of your study, and suggesting ways to improve on your results.
• Minimum of 1500 words (excluding bibliography), with 1.5 spacing.
• Bibliography and in-text citations using either APA, MLA, Chicago or IEEE format (must
be consistent).
