Making a Dance
As seen in Module #2, choreographers use various “tools” when creating a dance. Throughout this course, you have begun the practice of analyzing dances for meaning. Dance makers (choreographers) utilize space, time, and energy to transform ideas into actions. This assignment will ask you to create an original composition that uses elements of space, time, and energy to express and communicate an idea through the medium of movement. (Gen Ed Creative Thinking SLO – Create an original contribution within a specific discipline.) How do we take a theme, such as “love” and translate it into a language that can be physicalized? For instance, if we connect the idea of love with the ideas of giving and receiving, we would need to create physical/movement ideas that express these ideas: maybe it is about support, weight sharing, or intimate touch. Or, if we take a theme such as “anxiety” perhaps our movement choices would involve quick and sharp movements that travel chaotically throughout the space. After you created your contribution, you will reflect and re-evaluate on this process through a written paper. (Gen Ed Creative Thinking SLO – demonstrate responsiveness within an established disciplinary context to new information, experiences, and ideas through a process of re-evaluating the ideas and/or approaches)
Assignment: For this assignment, you will turn in a written reflective paper that includes the link to your final video! You will create a solo or a duet. You are the choreographer (the dance maker). If you prefer not to dance, you can choreograph this work on someone else.
Written Descriiption Submission – upload via this Canvas assignment. Include the link to your project file in your document.
Written Portion
Your written portion will be five paragraphs (at least 750 words). Refer to the tutorial videos for descriiptions of how elements of movement (space, time, force) can create meaning. (Gen Ed Creative Thinking SLO – demonstrate responsiveness within an established disciplinary context to new information, experiences, and ideas through a process of re-evaluating the ideas and/or approaches)
First paragraph: Describe your theme and summarize the key ideas you discovered in researching your theme – how does it connect with conversations of larger scale and/or the work of other art-makers? Cite/use your thematic research sources for context.
Second Paragraph: Describe what the body is doing (movement) and how it relates to and supports your theme.
Third Paragraph: Describe where the body is going in space and how it relates to and supports your theme.
Fourth Paragraph: Describe how the body is doing what it’s doing (quality of movement/dynamics) and how it relates to and supports your theme.
Fifth Paragraph: Reflect on the creative process. Do you believe you were successful at physicalizing your theme? Where did you take risks in your approach (place, costuming, location, music, etc). How did this experience expand your knowledge of dance and dance making?
And put the link to your uploaded box video file in your document as well.
