In Week 2, you explored multiple learning theories that are instrumental in education. This week, you will focus on learning approaches. Approaches and theories are not the same. A learning approach is how the theory is played out in today’s classrooms. There are several different learning approaches that can be used in early childhood education. It is important that you can determine which teaching approach you most connect with, so that you feel confident about how you are teaching your students.
In A Tale of Six Classrooms, you will encounter six different classroom scenarios. Each of the scenarios describes a classroom that follows one of the six main approaches (Creative Curriculum, direct instruction, High Scope, Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Project approach) that are shared in Estes and Krogh (2012). After you complete the readings, you are responsible for creating and publishing a question within the Packback Discussion that opens a dialogue with your peers regarding the main approaches to curriculum in early childhood settings.
