Outline of Wri-ng Assignments:• Part 1 (Due May 20th) : Choose a par6cular economic policy that you think should be implemented. Explain why you think it’s important and who/what opposes the policy.• Part 2 (Due June 10th) : Try to determine what are the most effec-ve strategies/tac-cs for implemen-ng it, based on how similar policies have been implemented in the past.Purpose of Part 2 of the Wri-ng Assignment: Making policy change happen takes more than just having a well-thought-out policy and strong arguments for it. If there are powerful forces that oppose the policy, then those who are in favor of the policy must build their power to overcome that resistance. ShiMing support among legislators and other elected poli6cians is only one part of this process. In order to force legislators and poli6cians to shiM their views and to take ac6on, the people outside of government must organize to exert their power on the government. As Howard Zinn said, “The really cri6cal thing isn’t who’s siSng in the White House, but who is siSng in the streets, in the cafeterias, in the halls of government, in the factories. Who is protes6ng, who is occupying offices and demonstra6ng? Those are the things that determine what happens.” In this perspec6ve where history and policy change are driven from below, everyday people like us play the most important role in making change. But what exactly should we be doing to make this happen? Organize – but how? What strategies/tac6cs should our organiza6ons use? Looking at how policies have changed in the past will give us a be[er idea of what we can and should be doing now.Instruc-ons for Part 2: Now that you have done some research and wri6ng in support of (or opposi6on to) a par6cular policy in Part 1 of the assignment, Part 2 is about thinking strategically about how ordinary people can make a difference in overcoming policy barriers. There are two main sec6on in Part 2 of the assignment:Sec-on 1• Clearly and briefly (one sentence) state what policy you decided to support or oppose in part 1of the assignment, as a reminder.• What do you think will be the most effec-ve tac-cs that you and others can use to get your chosen policy implemented (or to prevent implementa6on of a specific policy)? One tac6c alone will probably not be enough, so you must discuss at least two tac-cs that you think would be most effec6ve. Obviously, poli6cians will be a key factor in determining policy changes, so you should focus on tac-cs that ordinary everyday people can take.• Explain why you think these will be the most effec6ve tac6cs for overcoming the barriers that oppose your chosen policy. Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each tac6c.Some ideas for possible tac6cs:o Protests/rallies/marching in the streetso Calling/wri6ng/lobbying currently elected poli6cianso Labor strikes, workplace slowdowns, and disrup6ons of work o Raising awareness via social media and marke6ng campaignso Consumer boyco[s of certain businesses, products, or payments o Vo6ng campaigns and elec6ng new poli6cianso Civil disobedience, occupa6ons, and/or blockadeso Sending thoughts and prayersYou do not have to limit yourself to this list, these are just some sugges6ons. Be crea6ve and come up with your own ideas!Sec-on 2• Use at least one historical example to support your arguments in sec6on 1. Find an example where a similar policy was passed in the U.S. or another country. If your policy has already been enacted in another country, it will be helpful to examine how popular support was built to get the policy enacted in that country.• What are the important similari-es and differences between this historical example and the current context in which you want to enact your policy change? How does this historical example indicate that your proposed tac6cs in sec6on 1 will be most effec6ve?You must cite at least two reputable sources, including at least one source to back up your argument for your chosen tac-cs in sec-on 1 and at least oneother source that describes your historical example in sec-on 2. This does not count the source I have linked above. If you use it, be sure to cite it, but you must have at least twoaddi$onal sources besides the one I’ve given you. Use as many sources as you think you need to make a strong argument in the word limit given. You can use MLA, APA, or any other common cita6on format, just as long as you make it clear where you got your informa-on and how others can access it, if they want.
