The critical film review is to identify, discuss, and evaluate The Matrix (1999), which is a film rich in religious symbolism and themes. Film reviews have particular requirements and should follow the guidelines outlined below. This is not a personal review of the film, but a review that demonstrates the ability to analyze the building blocks of the story, the purpose of the narrative, and most importantly, the films content.
Review only the Reference.pdf without any other external references in order to identify the religious elements that the film draws on.
Watch the film and consider the following:
Context: When is the movie taking place, and what is the historical setting?
Characters: Who are the central characters, and what is the purpose of each in the film? Are they archetypal figures? Do they represent specific values? ideals? beliefs?
Plot: What is the central story (in a couple of sentences)? Identify the religious themes, concepts, and symbols that are used in this film, and explain how these elements further the plot.
Analysis: Evaluate the religions used in the film, discussing specific examples. Are the religious examples subtle or obvious? Is the message of the film hopeful or bleak? Why do you think this film resonates in popular culture? How do you think myth applies to the films religious content? What does the use of religion suggest?
A sample film review is attached, the written review should emphasize the religious parallels and concepts in the film more so than the sample review.
