After reading Chapters 1 through 4 in Jeremy Travis’ book ‘But They All Come Back,’ provide your reflections on the reading. Here are some questions you can answer, however you are free (and encouraged to) share your general thoughts and critical thinking about the first part of this book overall. You can choose to answer any one of these questions and you do not need to answer all of them.
1. Are there problems with determinate sentencing strategies? What about indeterminate sentencing? Which strategy may have more fruitful results?
2. What are some of the barriers to re-entry which released individuals must face? Are we addressing these barriers? Can we do better, or does “nothing work”?
3. Do the effects of incarceration reach beyond the offender? Are we responsible for limiting those effects?
4. What are some barriers faced by individuals in the community, who are on supervision? Is society responsible for limiting such barriers?
5. What are invisible punishments? Who is affected by invisible punishments? What can we do to limit such punishments?
