Part 1
Discussing psychotic disorders and movement disorders. These have been placed together because sometimes our treatment of psychosis can cause movement disorders to arise, and movement disorders can also coincide with psychotic disorders. Provide a minimum of 150 words in response to the following questions:
1) When should you assess for movement disorders in your patients? Discuss the cause of movement disorders and how to identify them in practice. What rating scales can you use to identify movement disorders?
2) Discuss the difference between schizoaffective disorder and schizophrenia. Consider what safety concerns you would have with a patient who has these psychotic disorders and what type of treatment plan should we implement for their care. For example, should we consider guardianship, community involvement and family assistance?
3) Why is it important to identify these two disorders (schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder)?

Overview: The purpose of this assignment is to have a discussion about the prognosis of schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders including the impact on their quality of life.

Instructions: Students will read the Hasson-Ohayon article as part of the required materials for Module 5. Following the article, students will write a discussion posting of at least 400 words, giving your overall thoughts about the article and answering the discussion questions:
o After reading this article, do you think that someone without insight into their illness can truly recover from their mental illness? Why is insight important in regard to the treatment of mental illness? Please support your position with at least one outside supportive reference.
o In your future practice, how do you plan to help educate and identify symptoms in your patients with a psychotic disorder?
o Discuss your thoughts about possible future difficulties you may face when treating someone with a psychotic disorder. How could you mitigate those concerns?
