Reading Reflection
To complete this assignment, you will need to review the video you watched in this week’s Reading and Viewing by Temple Grandin:
Temple Grandin, diagnosed with autism as a child, talks about how her mind works—sharing her ability to “think in pictures,” which helps her solve problems that “neurotypical” brains might miss. She makes the case that the world needs people on the autism spectrum: visual thinkers, pattern thinkers, verbal thinkers, and all kinds of smart geeky kids.
There are two parts to your paper:
Grandin discusses how she is able to build a bridge of understanding between humans and animals, as well as between people on and off the autism spectrum. In terms of language development, explain two to three bridges of information that link our textbook readings to the personal information Dr. Grandin presents.
Though autism is not a language disorder, many autistic children display linguistic disorders. Communication is very difficult for those who have autism. How would you address linguistic disorders in an autistic student in a mild/moderate setting? What does Dr. Grandin’s story imply about effective approaches to teaching children with autism? What are the implications of this way of thinking for special educational professionals for designing interventions for language acquisition and development of children with autism?
Also, can you find Scripture that supports your narrative? What teachings from the Bible correspond to the context of what Dr. Grandin reflects regarding natural behavior and language for children with autism in society?
Using the rubric as your guide, your paper must be:
Two pages in length (not including the cover page and reference page).
Constructed using an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion with quality college-level writing.
Written in Word using APA format. It should include the following:
A cover page.
Assignment written in APA acceptable fonts and sizes, double spaced.
In-text citations to support main points.
A reference page with full APA references for each in-text citation used for support.
Supported by Scripture.
