INSTRUCTIONS
Please choose one of the prompts below and write a 4-5-page expository essay that shows original work. I do not require that you do additional research; however, it is a good idea to consult our in-class scholarship that pertains to your topic. Should you conduct external research, please remember that I am more interested in what you have to say; keep your analysis at the forefront. The essay should conform to MLA guidelines and be formatted in 12-point Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins.
A successful essay will include:
A thesis statement. You need to argue something. Something beyond the obvious. Basically, ask yourself “So what?” If you have a hard time answering this question, rework your thesis.
State your observations. Be sure to include textual evidence. What makes you think what you do? What tipped you off in the text? Incorporate this evidence in your writing.
Clarity and Organization. Have an introduction. Give your reader topic sentences. Create transition statements. Write a conclusion.
Essay Prompts
Lauren has a dream in the first chapter about flying and facing a major obstacle. Describe this dream, and then explain its symbolism in the context of the novel. What themes does this dream foreshadow?
Why does Lauren reject Christianity, and how does the new religion of Earthseed differ from Christianity? Why do you think Octavia Butler chose to make a Biblical reference by choosing to give her book the title The Parable of the Sower?
