Each student will research a health issue using data sets and professional literature,
and come up with a plan to address that issue using course concepts and terminology.
Students will present their project to the class in the form of a powerpoint presentation.
In your powerpoint presentation, address the following:
 Title Slide: Your health issue and target population. Your name.
 Slide 1: Briefly describe the problem indicating the “burden of disease” including
morbidity and mortality and changes that have occurred in recent years. Justify
why you have chosen this specific disease using Healthy People 2020/30 and/or
another public health initiative if HP2020/30 isn’t relevant to your issue.
 Slide 2: Expand on the burden of disease locally compared to state and/or
national trends using data from County Health Rankings. Justify why you have
chosen a different local data set if HP2020/30 isn’t relevant to your issue.
 Slide 3: Briefly describe the course of the disease or condition using the concepts
of incidence, prevalence and case-fatality. If these concepts are not relevant to
your subject explain what they mean and why they are not relevant.
 Slide 4: Identify at one or two at-risk groups (those with an increased probability
of developing and/or experiencing bad outcomes), and explain why these groups
are at-risk of developing your health issue (be sure to use course concepts).
 Slide 5: Identify 2 options for potential interventions to address the problem. For
each of the options identify the primary focus in terms of When (Primary,
secondary or tertiary prevention), Who (individual, at-risk group, population) and
How (education, motivation, obligation, incentive). Number each of the potential
interventions. Identify each option then bullet or create a table giving your
answers to When, Who and How for each option. From these potential
interventions select 1 that you identify as most effective.
 Slide 6: Specifically indicate the advantages and disadvantages of the
intervention that you selected as most effective and why you think it would be
effective.
 Slide 7: Reference page. Use formal APA citations for ALL references. You also
need to include in-text citations on each PowerPoint slide.
