not diagnosed and treated early. Since exposure to UV light is associated with increased risk of skin
cancer, a number of countries (including Ireland, France, England, Spain, and Brazil) as well as a number
of states in the US (including New York) restrict the access of teenagers to tanning beds and salons.
Representatives of the tanning industry argue against these regulations, saying that the link between
indoor tanning and cancer is unproven, and exposure to moderate amounts of indoor tanning light can
actually be healthy. Is the evidence linking indoor tanning to skin cancer strong enough to justify these
laws and regulations, or is this just another example of unnecessary government regulation? Even if the
laws limiting teen access to tanning beds seem like a good idea, do they actually work and can they
really be enforced?
