Question One: Who is our 36th President? (Worth up to 50 Points)
To answer this question, you will use three sources—(1) Reading- LBJ and the Great Society (the reading you already completed for the quiz, (2) LBJ Documentary—the short documentary that you watched for the quiz and (3) Washington Post’s Presidential Podcast-LBJ—this source is new and you will listen to two excerpts from the podcast about LBJ—the podcast is in the module. YOU MUST INCLUDE specifics from the sources, especially the podcast, to receive credit on this question.
Once you have listened to the podcast, use the three sources to answer the following:
Imagine you are teaching a class of students about the 36thpresident of the United States. Tell the students about LBJ, the man and the politician–include specifics about his childhood, political career, character, leadership qualities and legacy.
Question Two- Create your own legislation (worth up to 50 Points)
You are a newly elected congressman. What is the most pressing issue facing American society today? Why is this issue significant? Create a new law that you will submit to the House of Representatives.
Do you know the name of your current representative to the House? Do you know the number of your congressional district? Not all people in Jacksonville, or in North Florida, have the same representative. For example, I have a different rep than a friend who lives only three blocks away. So, first look up your representative based on your address. You can find this information here: (Links to an external site.)
Then, complete the following:
Tell me your name, the congressional district you represent, and the representative you have replaced. For example, I would say—My name is Dana Logan. I represent the 5th Congressional District of Florida and I have replaced Congressman Al Lawson.
Name your legislation and provide a brief descriiption of your legislation.
Explain why the legislation is needed- why is this issue one of the most pressing challenges facing American society today?
Address specifically why this issue should be solved by the federal government rather than being left to state government.
How will this legislation be implemented? What types of costs are associated with this legislation? How will it be paid for? Will it be difficult to enforce?
Rubric For Writing Assignments
Content- Critical Analysis
Your writing assignments should always include critical analysis. What does that mean?
When you answer the questions, include your interpretation or evaluation of the events or topic.
Why is the topic important or significant? Why does it matter? What impact has this event or topic had on American society? Can we see this impact today?
Content- Specific Examples from the Sources
Your writing assignments should always include specific examples from the sources provided.
Your answers should synthesize the material, using your own language with supporting specific examples from the sources.
Content- Using OUTSIDE SOURCES
Should you use outside sources for your writing assignments? Should you google these topics? The easy answer is NO, do not use outside sources.
I strongly discourage the use of outside sources because the questions that I ask in the writing assignments are very specific and tailored to the sources. When students use outside sources, they may unintentionally plagiarize, which can lead to a failing grade in the course. So, unless I specifically ask you to use outside sources, just stick with sources I provide for you—trust me, it will make the assignment easier—no need to create extra work for yourself.
Works Cited Page
You do not need a works cited page unless you use sources other than those I have provided and/or the textbook. If you use a direct quote from the sources, use quotations and simply identify the source in parentheses, but no works cited page is needed.
Formatting
Write your answers in Microsoft WORD first and save frequently. All students have access to word through the Office 365 link in our Canvas course shell.
Your assignment should be in a regular 12 point font and double spaced.
