This is a two-part paper The first part you will Record a data sheet:
 Locate the videos I have uploaded
 Part 1: One partner (the prey) tosses a ball to the other partner (predator) to catch. Use the data sheet to record
whether the predator catches the ball on each trial. Repeat for each of the 12 balls.
o Now toss 2 balls at once (repeat 6 times). Record the number of balls caught on each of the following trials.
o Then, 3 balls at once (repeat 4 times).
o Lastly, 4 balls at once (repeat 3 times).
 Part 2: Substitute 3 yellow balls for 3 of the 12 white ones and repeat the previous procedure.
o Note how many balls are caught on each trial and when the yellow ball(s) were caught.
o Use the data sheet to determine when we throw a yellow (odd prey) ball instead of a white ball. We throw
a yellow ball each trial there is an asterisk.
 Record a data sheet for both Paige and Courtney’s throws (In the video, Paige is wearing the purple jacket and
Courtney is wearing the black shirt).

For the Lab Report/Reaction Lab Write Up:
 Our 3 hypotheses:
1.) Null: Percent prey captured will not decline as prey group size increases.
Alternative: Percent prey captured will decline as prey group size increases (Dilution Effect).
2.) Null: Percent successful hunts will not decline as prey group size increases.
Alternative: Percent successful hunts will decline as prey group size increases (Confusion Effect).
3.) Null: Yellow golf balls will not differ significantly from 25% of prey captures.
Alternative: Yellow golf balls will constitute significantly more than 25% of prey captured (Odd Prey Effect).
 Use the Excel spreadsheet to calculate the following statistics:
1) The percentage of total balls caught for each group size in part 1.
2) The percentage of total hunts that were successful (trials where at least one ball was captured) for
each group size in part 1.
3) The percentage of total odd prey caught for each group size in part 2.
4) Use a one-way ANOVA to calculate whether there are any significant differences between group sizes
for each effect.
A few things to keep in mind:
 Please use a one-way ANOVA to see if there are any significant differences between each group size for each effect.
(i.e., Does the percentage go down as sample size increases for the dilution and confusion effect? Is the percentage
25% or more for each same size for the odd prey effect and does the percentage increase as sample size goes up?)
 Please make a graph for each of the 3 calculations with mean
percentage on the y-axis and group size on the x-axis and attach them in the Appendix of your paper with your SPSS
output. The easiest way to make the graphs if you are using SPSS is to click on the “Options” box within the one-way
ANOVA setup and check off “means plot.”
 Lastly, please use APA style when you report any values in your write up. For example, “Throwing one ball at a time
resulted in the largest amount of total prey caught (M = 0.97, SD = 0.05). The results of a one-way analysis of
variance showed there was a significant difference between group sizes, F(3,68) = 36.02, p < 0.001. Figure 1 depicts the mean percentage of prey caught as sample size increases. It shows that the mean percentage of prey caught. decreased as prey group size increased." (Of course, your numbers will differ from the ones used here.)
