Describe a time in your professional life when the organization was out of balance. Was there too much focus on people or too much focus on profit? What were the disadvantages of being out of balance? Give specific examples. Keep your response to 150-300 words.

A pivotal time in my career where what felt like to me, my organization was focusing too much time on profit and less time on people was when COVID 19 was at it’s height in my hospital. Like many other hospitals faced, my organization was seeing a surplus of critical patients. Due to the high demand of patients, this was causing the hospital to open up more beds than we could physically staff, and as Atchison described it, “healthcare workers are required to do more with less”(Page 4). Our patient to healthcare provider ratio was drastically increasing which was causing an unsafe work environment not only for the healthcare provider, but for the patients as well. Not only were we dealing with the influx of sick patients, the healthcare providers were beginning to get sick, too. According to the CDC at the time, it was deemed “safe” to continue to provide care to patients in the hospital even if you were sick with COVID as well. At the time, my organization was not providing paid time off for healthcare providers who were sick to allow them time to rest and heal before they had to return to work. Between increasing patient ratios and not allowing sick time off, it was evident to me that the organization was out of balance by providing too much focus on profit and less time on their employees (feeling like an “economical unit” (page 7) and patients.

The disadvantages of being out of balance is that the employees were feeling resentment and aggression towards leadership. We felt undervalued and that our safety and the patients safety was not a main priority at this time. As an effective leader, you should always keep in mind the organization’s mission, vision and values and follow those while balancing the intangibles and tangibles of the company in order to inspire and gain followers.
